“The Cake Aussie” Naomi Levine brings a new accent to Chicago Custom Cake Designing
There is an art form to custom cake designing and Naomi Levine, owner and operator of TipsyCake in Chicago proves to be an expert in the field. The Australian-born baker moved to Chicago in 1999, aspired to own her own business, loved dealing with customers and had a passion for baking. Thus, began Levine’s adventure. She began studying baking and pastry at the Illinois Institute for the Arts in 2004 and launched TipsyCake as a web-based business selling baked goods to local restaurants and hotels. As her popularity grew she knew she had to find a place of her own to bake her creations and since 2006 TipsyCake calls 1043 N. California in the diverse Humboldt Park neighborhood, home.
Levine started baking on her own at the young age of nine. “My favorite books back then were cookbooks. I was fascinated with Australian Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book and Margaret Fulton’s Encyclopedia of Food & Cookery. It’s a dream come true to have my own successful bakery. There is nothing better than to make a living at what you love to do,” Levine says.
“The Cake Aussie”, as she has been coined by her friends and fans, has fast become the go-to-girl when a custom cake is needed for a special occasion. “If you want to really wow a guest of honor on their birthday or for any other special occasion, especially someone like Mike Ditka, you need to hire Naomi from TipsyCake. She does an amazing job at creating your vision in a scrumptious piece of artwork. For Coach Ditka’s 70th birthday she took a photo I sent her of ‘Da Pork Chop’ and Ditka Wine and created a cake! People were in shock that it was a cake, because it looked so real. She does amazing work, you almost don’t want to eat the cake, but then you do and are equally surprised her artwork could be so delicious. Naomi Levine is hands down the best in the business,” says Heather Joyce, Director of Sales at Mike Ditka’s Restaurants.
Popular special event planner Rochelle Baker agrees. “When my clients need a whimsically designed custom cake that looks as good as it tastes, I recommend TipsyCake. Chef Naomi Levine expertly combines wholesome and fresh ingredients with a unique design sense to create beautiful cakes and pastries for all occasions. The frosting on the cake is Naomi's professionalism and wonderful customer service,” says Baker.
Wedding cakes are also big business for TipsyCake. Levine speaks with each bride individually to create the perfect cake for the most important day of their lives. From the elegant wedding cake to the quirkiness of a groom’s cake, Levine can do it. “My wonderfully talented cake artists and I recently designed a four foot long groom’s cake in the shape of the Texas Longhorn’s stadium. We even had LED lights on the scoreboard. A local sportscaster just order a replica of Wrigley Field to surprise her husband-to-be. Groom’s cakes are becoming just as popular as wedding cakes nowadays and we love it,” Levine says.
“I have never seen such spectacular cakes then those of TipsyCake. Naomi not only is extremely talented and creative, she is a joy to work with at weddings. I get excited when I find out that I will be photographing one of Naomi’s cakes, because I know it will be make for a fantastic centerpiece. Furthermore, I love and respect Naomi for her thoughtfulness and generosity to other women entrepreneurs. She formed a monthly networking event so we can all get together and exchange ideas. She is truly one-of-a-kind,” says Jai Girard, a well-respected and sought after wedding photographer in Chicago.
Levine was recently tapped to design the cake for the Sex & the City 2 movie premiere in Chicago. She also provided cupcakes and pastries for the event. “Incredible,” “amazing,” and “delicious” are just some of the words to describe Naomi’s handiwork that evening.
At any given time, Levine will have 6 -12 young cake artists and sculptors working in the bakery. Levine takes on the role of sales, creator and boss and the artists assist her in seeing the jobs through with her expertise and direction. All of the recipes used are Levine’s own. Levine’s extensive menu of specialties that are available daily at TipsyCake include red velvet, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, turtle brownies, cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting and Australian pastries.
