I’m often reminded at the tenacity, courage and drive Australian expats possess. The ability to leave the comfort of family, friends and their local cultural to pursue a dream, push boundaries or explore the possibility of love.
This month we feature Naomi Levine, head chef at TipsyCake.
Q&A with Naomi Levine
Jessica: Tell me how the initial idea to own and manage your own bakery develop?
Naomi: I had enough with corporate world, management and wanted to be my own boss and thought cakes, pastries, and business would be a dream and a challenge.
Jessica: How long have you lived in the USA?
Naomi: Since 1998
Jessica: What do you miss most about Australia?
Naomi: The food, the ocean, the independent shops and the Manly Sea Eagles.
Jessica: What do you love most about America?
Naomi: My family that is here (my partner and my son) and the opportunity to grow a business.
Jessica: What advice can you offer other aspiring chefs looking to start their own business in America?
Naomi: At the end of the day you cater to what the public want not what you love and are passionate about.
Jessica: Top 3 challenges you faced as an expat, running your own business?
Naomi: Accent. People not understanding and thinking that I sound “snobby”
The customer is always right is taken to a whole different level in the USA
Mixing up sports team and sending the wrong logo. Cardinals and Cardinals.
Jessica: Most interesting cake you have ever created?
Naomi: An African monument for the President of Senegal.
Jessica: Most famous client?
Naomi: Mike Ditka, Tyrus Thomas, and Sam Witwer, Kanye West to name a few.
Jessica: What can an Aussie expat expect from TipsyCake?
Naomi: Tastes of home and our willingness to make them ANY Dessert or pastry they wish.
